Prasat Beng Mealea

Beng Mealea (“Lotus Pond”) is a large, mostly ruined temple located about 40 km east of Angkor, along the old royal road leading to Preah Khan of Kompong Svay. Its position was strategic, near a canal connecting to the Great Lake that may have been used to transport sandstone from nearby quarries.

The temple has suffered damage over the years from its age, the tropical weather, and large trees growing on it that slowly break it apart. Although the temple is ruined and looks chaotic, it remains naturally beautiful and gives a sense of adventure.

Visiting:
Beng Mealea is largely uncleared, making exploration more adventurous than at Ta Prohm. It is recommended to have a guide to help navigate the paths, as some areas are difficult to walk. Visitors will see beautiful carvings, such as apsaras, nagas, and other deities.

Travel tips:
The temple can be visited any time of year, though daylight for travel is essential. It can be combined with Banteay Srei, Kbai Spean, or Phnom Kulen for a longer adventure. Beng Mealea is about 77 km from Siem Reap, with some seasonal challenges.
